The Handloom industry of Bangladesh has a long tradition and heritage. Once upon a time, the world famous Muslin was produced by the handloom weavers of Bangladesh and this prestigious cloth was popular and used by the Kings and Queens of different countries. By the passage of time, Muslin faced extinction. But till today, the glory of Muslin has been upheld by the Benarashi, Katan, and Tangail Saree produced in the country.
Bangladesh Handloom Board was established by an presidential ordinance in 1977 to help the weavers societies and to develop the handloom industry of Bangladesh. Textile sector plays an important role for industrialization in every country of the world. Bangladesh Handloom Board has been working to develop the textile sector from very beginning of it’s establishment. To render pre and post weaving services for the weavers, supplying of working capital to the weavers, to increase the popularity of handloom fabrics and for extension of handloom product markets; Bangladesh Handloom Board arrange/patronize various domestic handloom product Mela/Fair. In order to acquiring self-sufficiency in textile sector, Bangladesh Handloom Board establish basic centre, services and Facilities Center and handloom education and training institute in loom intensive areas for the extension of training programme, ensuring of supply of the production input and establish proper marketing facilities.
